AARBAA's 18-month advocacy campaign resulted in Phoenix approving a comprehensive $12M protected cycling network featuring innovative shade structures and heat-reflective materials - the first desert-climate design of its kind.
$12M investment, 22 miles of heat-safe protected lanes, shade structures every quarter mile
The 37-mile Tucson Urban Loop received protected infrastructure upgrades including physical barriers, shade ramadas, and separated crossing zones, making it one of the Southwest's premier safe cycling routes.
37 miles upgraded with protected infrastructure
Scottsdale approved AARBAA's plan to convert the existing Greenbelt path into fully separated protected cycling infrastructure with grade-separated crossings at major intersections.

INFRASTRUCTURE CASE FILES · OPEN MATTERS
Camelback Road is one of Phoenix's busiest east-west corridors but has zero protected cycling infrastructure, forcing cyclists into high-speed traffic lanes or onto narrow, dangerous sidewalks.
I-10 frontage roads throughout the Valley serve as de facto bike routes but offer no protection, creating dangerous high-speed mixing zones especially during extreme heat when cyclists are most vulnerable.
Flagstaff's mountainous terrain and winter conditions create unique challenges, with steep roads lacking any protected infrastructure and inadequate snow removal on existing bike lanes.

The AARBAA Arizona chapter advocates for heat-resistant protected cycling infrastructure designed for our extreme desert climate. We work with cities across Arizona to implement separated bike lanes with shade structures and proper cooling considerations.
We currently have 612 active members across 4 chapters in Phoenix (largest), Tucson, Scottsdale, and Flagstaff, making Arizona one of our strongest southwestern chapters.
Arizona's extreme heat (115°F+ summers) creates unique challenges requiring shade structures, heat-reflective materials, and consideration for dehydration risks. Additionally, sprawling metro areas and high-speed arterial roads demand extensive protected lane networks.
Absolutely! Our biggest win was securing $12M for Phoenix's comprehensive protected lane network with shade structures, plus successful advocacy for separated infrastructure in Tucson, Scottsdale, and Tempe.
Thanks to AARBAA advocacy, yes! We've successfully pushed for shade structures, light-colored heat-reflective lane materials, and water stations along protected bike routes to make summer cycling safer.
