INFRASTRUCTURE CASE FILES · OPEN MATTERS
High-speed frontage roads along I-65 through Jefferson County force cyclists to share lanes with 55+ mph traffic without any protective barriers or dedicated space, creating extremely dangerous conditions.
The Mobile Bay Causeway (US-98) provides the only direct route across the bay but offers zero protected infrastructure for cyclists, forcing dangerous sharing of narrow shoulders with high-speed traffic.
Eastern Boulevard serves as a major commuter corridor but lacks any separated cycling infrastructure, creating conflict zones where cyclists and vehicles compete for limited space during rush hour.

The AARBAA Alabama chapter advocates for separated cycling infrastructure through city council presentations, community outreach, and collaboration with the Alabama Department of Transportation. We've successfully secured dedicated bike lanes on Highway 280 and throughout downtown Montgomery.
We currently have 287 active members across 3 local chapters in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile, making Alabama one of our fastest-growing southeastern chapters.
Alabama faces unique challenges with high-speed rural highways, suburban sprawl in the Birmingham metro area, and inadequate cycling infrastructure on major corridors like Highway 280 and I-65 frontage roads.
Yes! Our biggest win was the approval of 15 miles of protected cycling lanes on the Highway 280 corridor in Birmingham, plus 8 additional infrastructure improvements across Montgomery and Mobile worth over $12 million in total investment.
Our Birmingham chapter meets the first Thursday of every month, Montgomery meets the second Tuesday, and Mobile meets the third Wednesday. All meetings are open to the public and we encourage concerned citizens to attend.
